Across to Contalmaison, Somme battlefield
Across to Contalmaison, Somme battlefield. Oil 12 x 10 inches Unframed Board
Painted plein air next to Dantzig Alley British Cemetery from positions captured by the British on the opening day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916. The view is looking across to the village of Contalmaison over ground that was bitterly fought over in the first ten days of July 1916. It was an emotional spot from which to paint and I could feel the weight of loss in the air, a palpable sense that I have when visiting such places.
