Many of you will be aware that Paul Banning died on 4 May 2021 after being diagnosed with cancer. His death was very peaceful – at home, in his own bed with family caring for him, surrounded by flowers and with Mozart playing.
His family have been heartened by the many cards received and messages of goodwill. He will live on, bringing joy through his paintings which adorn walls all over the world.
Paul will have a private cremation on Friday morning. Please do raise a glass to the old boy that evening.
His family will be celebrating Paul's remarkable life later in the year.

We are pleased to announce that we were recently successful with an application to the @nimuseums ‘Collecting for the Future Fund’, which is supported by the Esme Mitchell Trust. The grant enable us to purchase a Triptych painting by artist Paul Banning RI RSMA. @paulbanningartist
“Five Weeks before the 1st July 1916”. Three paintings that depict an original Great War scene painted in watercolours as a triptych. The scene is the view over the Ancre Valley from Hamel Church towards the village of Thiepval, France and is based on the Fourth Army panorama No. 59 taken from Charles Avenue an area well known during the Battle of the Somme in 1916. The view incorporates much of the ground assaulted by the 36th (Ulster) Division on 1st July 1916 and the area in which they were billeted prior to the battle. The Battle of the Somme covered a 20 mile front and the scene depicted in this triptych is associated with the men from Ulster who fought over this ground, in 1916.
The triptych was originally painted for and exhibited in the Armed Forces Art Society exhibition of 2014 at The Mall Galleries, London as part of the Decade of Centenaries commemorations.
These beautiful watercolours will enhance and complement other historic items within the Somme collection.

I was unable to join my friends from @wappinggroupofartists at Buckingham Palace yesterday for their painting day but painted this view of nearby Green Park in my studio. It is painted from photos taken about four years ago. I taught a plein air course based at the Mall Galleries and took my group to Green Park. During the summer this is usually packed with tourists but I’m sure it’s been quieter in 2020.
